📖 Essential Fiqh Guidelines on Zakat
What is Nisab and how is it determined?
The Nisab is the minimum threshold of net wealth a Muslim must possess before becoming liable to pay Zakat. It is equivalent to either 85 grams of 24k Gold or 595 grams of pure Silver. Classical scholars recommend the Silver standard for liquid cash because its lower threshold ensures broader assistance to the poor and needy.
What is the 1-Year (Hawl) requirement?
Hawl represents one full lunar year (approximately 354 days). Once your wealth touches the Nisab threshold, you note the Islamic date. If your wealth remains at or above Nisab one lunar year later, Zakat is due on the entire balance present on that anniversary date.
Who is eligible to receive Zakat? (The 8 Quranic Categories)
Surah At-Tawbah (9:60) specifies eight legitimate recipient categories:
- The Poor (Al-Fuqara): Those with zero or insufficient income.
- The Needy (Al-Masakin): Those in extreme economic distress.
- Zakat Administrators: Those appointed to collect and disburse Zakat.
- Those whose hearts are to be reconciled: New Muslims or sympathetic allies.
- Emancipation: Freeing captives or those in bonded servitude.
- The Debt-Ridden (Al-Gharimin): Those overwhelmed by inescapable debt.
- In the Cause of Allah (Fi Sabilillah): Defending faith and community welfare.
- The Wayfarer (Ibn Al-Sabil): Stranded travelers in legitimate need.
Which assets are strictly exempt from Zakat?
Zakat is not due on items of daily personal consumption or necessity. This includes your primary residence, personal vehicle, household furniture, clothing, and business equipment used to operate trade rather than sold as merchandise.
